LOS ANGELES — The Television Academy has announced the nominees for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, and this year's field represents perhaps the most globally diverse and genre-spanning slate in the awards' history. HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 leads all programs with 24 nominations, closely followed by FX's Shōgun Season 2 with 22 and Apple TV+'s The Morning Show with 18 nominations for its final season.

The Drama Series category is a heavyweight battle: The Last of Us, Shōgun, Severance Season 2, The Crown (final season), Slow Horses, and the surprise Korean-language entry Pachinko Season 2. The inclusion of Pachinko — which received only a single nomination for its first season — is widely seen as a correction by the Academy after years of criticism for overlooking Asian-led dramas. "The nomination is satisfying," said showrunner Soo Hugh, "but what would truly be historic is a win for Minha Kim or Youn Yuh-jung, who delivered performances that should define this era of television."

The major snub dominating industry conversation: The Bear's third season, which had been widely expected to lead the comedy categories, was shut out entirely from major categories. The reason appears to be genre classification — the Academy reclassified the show as a drama, where it faced steeper competition and received only technical nominations. Netflix's The Diplomat similarly underperformed expectations, with Keri Russell's widely predicted Best Actress nomination failing to materialize. The ceremony will be broadcast live from the Peacock Theater on September 20, with the producers promising "a celebration of the medium, not just the industry."
