TOKYO — Sony Interactive Entertainment has officially unveiled the PlayStation 6 at its PlayStation Showcase event, confirming a November 2027 global launch date, a $599 price point, and technical specifications that represent the largest generational leap in PlayStation history. The announcement ends months of speculation and positions Sony to define the next console generation while Nintendo's Switch 2 continues its record-breaking sales trajectory.

The PS6 is built around a custom AMD system-on-chip combining a Zen 6 CPU with 8 cores clocked at 4.8 GHz and an RDNA 5-based GPU delivering approximately 45 teraflops of compute performance — nearly four times the PS5 Pro. The system includes 32GB of unified GDDR7 memory and a custom 2TB SSD with direct storage decompression that effectively eliminates loading screens. Sony claims the console can deliver native 8K at 60 frames per second or 4K at 240 frames per second with full path tracing — the holy grail of real-time rendering that simulates physically accurate light behavior.

The new DualSense Edge 2 controller features programmable adaptive trigger feedback with three distinct resistance levels, haptic motors in the grips and face buttons, and a built-in microphone array for voice commands. Backward compatibility extends to the entire PS4 and PS5 library, with select PS5 titles receiving free PS6 enhancement patches. Sony also announced PlayStation Portal 2, a standalone streaming handheld capable of playing PS6 games remotely at up to 1080p 120fps via WiFi 7 — priced separately at $199.
