LAUSANNE, Switzerland — The International Olympic Committee has officially confirmed that esports will debut as a medal event at the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, ending a decade of speculation and negotiation about whether competitive gaming belongs alongside athletics, swimming, and gymnastics. The decision has been met with a mixture of elation, skepticism, and existential hand-wringing from different corners of the gaming world.

The esports program for LA28 consists of three titles: League of Legends (team event, 5v5), Rocket League (team event, 3v3), and a newly commissioned "Olympic Esports Decathlon" developed in partnership with Epic Games using Unreal Engine 6. The Decathlon, which the IOC insisted on as a condition of inclusion, is designed to test a broader range of gaming skills — reaction time, strategic planning, spatial reasoning, and team coordination — across ten mini-games rather than mastery of a single title. "The Olympic movement is about the universality of human achievement," said IOC President Thomas Bach. "Esports represents a form of achievement that hundreds of millions of young people around the world recognize and aspire to. The Olympic Games must evolve or become irrelevant."

Qualification will follow a national team model, with players representing their countries rather than professional franchise teams. This has created friction in the esports ecosystem, where the dominant competitive structure is professional leagues with international rosters. South Korea, China, and Denmark are expected to field the strongest League of Legends national teams, while the United States, Brazil, and France are early favorites in Rocket League. The IOC estimates global viewership for the esports medal events at 250-400 million, which would make them among the most-watched competitions of the Games. Sponsorship interest has been extraordinary, with the three-title program attracting an estimated $750 million in broadcast and sponsorship rights.
