PHOENIX, Arizona — In the high desert north of Phoenix, a complex of white cleanroom buildings now hums with an activity absent from American soil for nearly twenty years: the production of the world's most advanced logic semiconductors. TSMC's Fab 22A has officially entered volume production of 3-nanometer chips, the same process node used for Apple's latest A-series processors. The milestone is the culmination of an effort that began in 2020 when TSMC agreed to invest $12 billion, which ballooned to $65 billion across three planned fabs, fueled by $6.6 billion in CHIPS Act funding.
"92% of the world's most advanced logic chips come from a single facility — TSMC's Fab 18 in Tainan," said Dr. Chris Miller, author of Chip War. "The Arizona fabs are finally providing alternatives." Fab 22A produces approximately 30,000 wafers per month, roughly 8% of TSMC's advanced-node output. It employs 2,200 workers, 600 of whom are experienced engineers on multi-year assignments from Taiwan. TSMC says turnover rates have stabilized and Arizona workers now meet productivity benchmarks comparable to the company's mature Taiwan facilities.
