MENLO PARK, California — Meta's Quest 4 has sold 25 million units in its first six months on the market, a figure that eclipses the installed base of every previous generation of VR hardware — combined — and represents a genuine inflection point for a technology that has spent a decade promising a mainstream breakout that never quite materialized. The Quest 4, priced at $399 for the 256GB model, may finally be the device that delivers.

The hardware improvements are generational. The Quest 4 weighs 390 grams — roughly half the weight of the 2020 Quest 2 — with a balanced design that distributes weight across the head rather than the face. Pancake lens optics deliver edge-to-edge clarity and a 120-degree field of view that largely eliminates the "scuba mask" effect. Eye tracking enables foveated rendering — rendering only the portion of the image the user is looking at in full detail — which allows the onboard Qualcomm XR3 Gen 2 chip to deliver visual quality comparable to a PlayStation 5 running in performance mode. The controllers have been eliminated altogether: hand tracking is now precise enough for 95% of interactions.

"VR has had its iPhone moment," said Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth, referencing the device that transformed smartphones from a niche product to a universal one. "The Quest 4 is the first VR headset that a non-gamer can put on and immediately understand." The games library has matured in parallel: "Asgard's Wrath 3," "Resident Evil 9 VR," and "Half-Life: Alyx 2" (Valve's long-awaited sequel, released simultaneously on SteamVR and Quest 4) represent a caliber of exclusive software that previous VR generations lacked. The remaining barriers are social acceptance of head-mounted devices in shared spaces and the motion sickness that still affects roughly 20% of users.
