Mobile gaming generated $120 billion in revenue in 2026, according to Newzoo's annual Global Games Market Report — a figure that exceeds the combined revenue of the global film and music industries. Mobile now represents 55% of all gaming revenue worldwide, dwarfing console ($35 billion) and PC ($45 billion). And yet, in the cultural conversation about video games — the reviews, the awards, the discourse on social media — mobile gaming is barely present. The biggest platform in gaming is also the most culturally invisible.

The explanation is partly historical and partly structural. Gaming culture, as constituted by the enthusiast press, content creators, and social media communities, is built around the games that its participants grew up with: console and PC titles defined by narrative ambition, mechanical depth, and $60-70 price points. Mobile gaming's free-to-play, microtransaction-driven business model — represented by titles like Honor of Kings ($2.5 billion in 2025 revenue), Candy Crush Saga ($1.2 billion annually in its 14th year), and Genshin Impact ($2.1 billion) — is often dismissed as exploitative even by developers who work in it.

But the dismissal obscures genuine creative achievement. Genshin Impact's open world rivals anything on console. Monument Valley 3 was one of the most critically acclaimed games of 2025 across all platforms. The mobile platform has driven gaming's globalization — particularly in markets like India, Brazil, and Southeast Asia, where smartphones are the primary and often only gaming device. "Mobile is where gaming becomes truly universal," said Sensor Tower analyst Randy Nelson. "The industry treats it as a separate category, but for billions of people, mobile isn't a category of gaming — it is gaming." The question for the industry is whether mobile's business model — free-to-play with aggressive monetization — is a permanent feature or a transition phase as the platform matures.
